Top Chippy re-opened in May 2017 after it had been closed for many months due to the serious illness to the previous owner who is affectionately known as Tony Tea Cake.
Tony had renamed the chippy “Tony’s Top Chippy” when he bought the business many years ago. Firstly, because he was well known in Longridge and secondly because the chippy is at the top end of the village as anyone who walks up Berry Lane or Kestor Lane to buy their chippy tea will testify.
As a salute to the high regard and excellent reputation that Tony built up we felt it appropriate to change the name as little as possible when we took over. Our feeling was that although we wanted to keep the chippy’s full name as Tony wasn’t actually going to be frying we needed to change it slightly and so we became Top Chippy.

Fish – Cod & Haddock
Our main fish supplier is Smith Sagar Ltd who are based on the wholesale food market in Manchester. All the fish they supply us with is from sustainable sources and is delivered to us by Joe on his way home from work. Joe lives in Chipping but works in Manchester and starts work around 2am every morning !!
We prepare and cut the fillets to size each morning in our cellar prep room. Our standard fillet is 8oz without batter. A lite bite fillet is 4oz and a large fillet is 12oz.
Potatoes
Our supplier of spuds is Jess Turner Ltd from Chorley. They are the leading supplier of potatoes to chippy’s all over this area as they specialise in potatoes for chipping. We fry whatever they recommend to us as the best spuds they have in stock each week. We rumble and chip freshly each day in our cellar prep area.
Sausages
We supply McWhirters premium sausages in all sizes – small, jumbo and foot long super giant. They are meatier {70% meat content} and slightly spicier than many other chippy sausages
Pies & Puddings
We buy pies in frozen and bake them fresh each morning just before opening. Our puddings are steamed in our bain-maries fresh each day.
Chicken burgers, chicken nuggets & scampi
All our chicken burgers and nuggets are made from chicken breast meat not re-constituted or mechanically recovered meat.
Our scampi is Whitby brand premium wholetail breaded scampi.
Mushy peas, gravy and curry sauces
All are sauces and gravy are made fresh each morning by us using powder mixes. We steep dried peas and produce the mushy peas in house as well.
Barm Cakes and foot long buns
We are supplied by the Bread Roll Bakery from Darwen with bread.
HYGIENE
We are very proud to say that Top Chippy has a 5 Star hygiene rating on the local council’s scores on the doors scheme which helps to reassure our customers that we work to the highest standards in all we do. We work very hard at keeping all area’s of the chippy, café and prep room clean and tidy.
GLUTEN FREE
If you have a gluten intolerance or are fully coeliac we fry GF on Tuesday and Wednesday teatime openings {4.30pm – 8.pm}. Be assured we are very vigilant about cross contamination and all the equipment used is dedicated to GF and is only used for frying and handling GF. We use new fresh oil each week in one dedicated fryer for our GF fish & chips.
Packaging
At Top Chippy we feel strongly about the environment and do our very best to be as environmentally friendly as possible. All our standard takeaway trays are known as “Bio Boxes” and are made from a product called Bagasse which is derived from sugar cane. They are fully bio-degradable, re-cyclable and compostable but still watertight and won’t leak if you want peas, gravy or curry over your meal.
Our lite bite boxes are not watertight but are cardboard so are recyclable, bio-degradable and compostable as is our paper wrap. Our carrier bags are bio-degradable as well. Only our pots for peas, curry and gravy are made from polystyrene as we still haven’t found environmentally friendly pots yet – but we are still searching.
Environmentally friendly packaging is substantially more expensive than conventional packaging but as a business we are firm in our belief that we have a responsibility to use this type of packaging whenever possible and whatever the financial cost.
